Montenegro to apply for EU membership ( 2008-05-05)

Montenegro could be set to apply for membership of the European Union next year, it has been revealed. According to deputy prime minister Gordana Djurovic, the government wants the eastern European country to submit its bid in May or June 2009.

Speaking to Reuters, she stated that this would enable it to commence negotiating the terms of its accession at the beginning of 2010.She commented: "That's our plan. We believe it is the right time for a technical decision by the (EU) Council of Ministers to open up the application process."However, Ms Djurovic stated that other member states could reject the idea of Montenegro joining the EU because they have "enlargement fatigue".

During the last four years, 12 new countries have become part of the international alliance. This includes a number of other eastern European countries, including Romania, Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria.
